Exmouth and Coral Bay

The Pilbara region has some of the best coral reef in Australia. It is also so easy to access. The Ningaloo Reef is 260 km long and is Australia's largest fringing coral reef and the only large reef positioned very close to a landmass. The road from Exmouth to the reef takes you around the headland (Vlamingh Head) and lighthouse. We took a glass bottom boat tour of the reef with Ningaloo Treasures. It was highly enjoyable and we saw sea turtles, a reef shark and many many beautiful fish. Unlike when visiting the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland which takes 1.5 to 2 hours to boat out to the reef, it only takes a matter of minutes to be out over Ningaloo Reef.
After the boat trip we tried our hand and self-guided snorkelling over the reef. This is highly skilled activity involving getting on your flippers and goggles, swimming out about 20-30 metres and floating! Floating over the reef is amazing and we could have spent all day just floating and watching. We had such a great time we decided to move down the coast about 150kms and try out the snorkelling at Coral Cove (we are really enjoying the freedom of not being on a schedule).
