Derby

In Derby we stayed at the main caravan park – Kimberley Entrance. There is one other caravan park in town, but they do not allow children?! It was strange to be back in a big park, packed in with other people. While in Derby we organised to have a new charger to be sent from Brisbane to Broome (our next destination). We found Derby interesting and we made the most of our whole day there by learning the history of the area.

Derby’s history revolves around its port and shipping. Derby also has the largest tides in the southern hemisphere at 11.5m. We enjoyed taking photos of the sunset at both the jetty and the One Mile Dinner Tree.

We also went to the Prison Boab tree which has a bit of a sad history. Young aboriginal men were captured in the Kimberley and brought to Broome via Derby’s prison tree to work in the pearling industry.
