Charnley River Station (Along the Gibb River Road)

We spent a quiet two nights at Charnley River Station. The station was bought by the Wilderness Society and is now run as an eco-type retreat/campground. The station is 43km off the Gibb River Rd to the north. It is a much quieter place to stay than the similar Mornington Station which is also run by the Wilderness Society. It was nice to be in a place with minimal people. We have been quite surprised by the amount of other travellers along the Gibb, it might be remote but you are never alone. The gorges and the swimming aren’t that great at Charnley River Station, but still a nice place to spend a few days. There is also plenty of wildlife.

Dillie Gorge

There are lots of wallabies, enormous goannas, peacocks and dingoes wandering around the campground. We even had quite an exciting moment when we heard a great deal of commotion in the bush near our camper and then out bolts a wallaby closely followed by a dingo. I think the only reason he didn’t get to have wallaby for dinner was that he saw us which made him stop and turn back into the bush.
